Fire safety in factories and warehouses

Ensuring optimal fire safety within factories and warehouses is paramount for safeguarding both employees and valuable assets. At ISE Fire, we specialise in delivering top-tier fire safety solutions tailored specifically for industrial settings. Our comprehensive services encompass fire risk assessments, manufacturing fire safety measures, and industrial fire and safety protocols. Designed to meet the unique needs of manufacturing centers, warehouses, garages, and other industrial spaces throughout Northants and the Greater Midlands, our offerings prioritise the prevention and mitigation of fire hazards.

What hazards affect the industry & manufacturing sector?

There are a number of unique hazards present in industrial settings which present several fire hazards. Some typical causes of fire in this sector may include:

  • Machinery and equipment
  • Storage of combustible materials and/or waste
  • Welding and cutting operations
  • Electrical systems
  • Hot surfaces and heat sources
  • Pressurized systems and pipelines
  • Exothermic processes and other hazardous chemicals

Fortunately, ISE Fire is well positioned and experienced to identify these risks; create appropriate service plans; or to draft suitable fire training plans.

What are the legal requirements for industrial & manufacturing spaces?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is the primary legislation governing fire safety in non-domestic premises, including industrial establishments. The order places a duty on the responsible person (usually the owner or employer) to carry out a fire risk assessment, implement appropriate fire safety measures, and provide adequate training to staff and students. There is a field of supporting literature which has helped create the standards for fire safety expected throughout UK industry, such as Fire Safety Risk Assessment: Factories and Warehouses.

  • Means of Escape: Industrial spaces must have clearly marked escape routes, unobstructed fire exits, and emergency lighting systems to help occupants evacuate the building safely in the event of a fire.

  • Fire Detection and Alarm Systems: Industrial spaces must have appropriate fire detection and alarm systems in place, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, and manual call points. The systems must be regularly maintained and tested to ensure they are in working order.

  • Fire Suppression Systems: Depending on the size and layout of the building, industrial spacesmay be required to install fire suppression systems, such as sprinklers or mist systems.
  • Staff Training: All staff members must receive adequate training on fire safety procedures, including how to evacuate the building safely and how to use fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers.

  • Fire Safety Signage: Clear and visible fire safety signs must be displayed throughout the building, including exit signs, fire extinguisher signs, and fire assembly point signs.

  • Fire Risk Assessments: Industrial spaces must carry out regular fire risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement appropriate fire safety measures. The risk assessments should be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure they remain effective.

We have been using ISE Fire for many years to service our fire extinguishers. Their staff have always been professional and adhere to all site rules as they complete their work in a very safe manner. Any equipment failures are reported immediately and a suggestion for improvement is always readily available. All documentation is provided in a timely manner, and both the engineers and office staff have been very helpful in working with us to improve the range of extinguishers we have on site. The use of an extinguisher training course has been trained out to all our fire wardens, who now have a depth of knowledge on what type of extinguisher should be used for each type of fire, i.e. electrical, oil. I have since recommend ISE to other depots within our network, and would strongly recommend them in the future.
