What hazards affect medical and healthcare facilities?

There are a number of unique hazards present in commercial establishments which present several fire hazards. Some typical causes of fire in this sector may include:

  • Electrical equipment malfunctions
  • Flammable gases and liquids
  • Oxygen-rich environments
  • Combustible materials
  • Improper storage of chemicals
  • Overloaded electrical circuits
  • Smoking or open flames
  • Cooking facilities
  • Blocked fire exits
  • Lack of staff training

Fortunately, ISE Fire is well positioned and experienced to identify these risks; create appropriate service plans; or to draft suitable fire training plans.

What are the legal requirements for healthcare establishments?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is the primary legislation governing fire safety in non-domestic premises, including in medical facilities. The order places a duty on the responsible person (usually the owner or employer) to carry out a fire risk assessment, implement appropriate fire safety measures, and provide adequate training to staff and students. There is a field of supporting literature which has helped create the standards for fire safety expected in the UK commercial sector, such as Fire Safety Risk Assessment: Healthcare Premises.

  • Means of Escape: Healthcare premises must have clearly marked escape routes, unobstructed fire exits, and emergency lighting systems to help occupants evacuate the building safely in the event of a fire.

  • Fire Detection and Alarm Systems: Medical premises must have appropriate fire detection and alarm systems in place, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, and manual call points. The systems must be regularly maintained and tested to ensure they are in working order.

  • Fire Suppression Systems: Depending on the size and layout of the building, healthcare facilities may be required to install fire suppression systems, such as sprinklers or mist systems.
  • Staff Training: All staff members must receive adequate training on fire safety procedures, including how to evacuate the building safely and how to use fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers.

  • Fire Safety Signage: Clear and visible fire safety signs must be displayed throughout the building, including exit signs, fire extinguisher signs, and fire assembly point signs.

  • Fire Risk Assessments: Medical establishments must carry out regular fire risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement appropriate fire safety measures. The risk assessments should be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure they remain effective.

ISE New fire alarm system June 2020

We had a new fire alarm system installed at The Silverstone Branch Surgery in June. The 2 men worked for 3 days in a busy GP practice and completed the task exceptionally well. They worked without disturbing the staff and patients, whilst considering the extreme difficulties with the Corona Virus precautions as well.

The work was completed on time and all cleared and tidy when they left.

The staff said the 2 engineers were very pleasant and they didn’t know they were there!

Nigel at head office coordinated the work well and was always easy to contact. I would recommend the company to anyone.
